About the role

Operates specialized equipment in support of inspection, installation, and maintenance of railroad track.

Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized equipment (e.g., backhoe).
  • Perform preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.
  • Maintain proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.
  • May perform labor duties as needed.
  • Communicate with supervisor throughout the job process.
  • Ensure working conditions are safe and that proper PPE is being used as job duties require.
  • Follow DOT regulations; ensure proper permits and driving regulations are followed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.
  • Previous experience in railroad construction or maintenance preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to perform physically strenuous work.
  • Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires occasional use of 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50 lbs of force.
  • Requires occasional use of 10 lb sledge hammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75 lbs of force.
  • Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails, and ballast in a safe manner.
  • Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary.

Environmental Conditions

Work is performed outside in varying environmental conditions. Must carry out responsibilities in a fast-paced railroad/construction environment. Requires efficient development and performance of processes and the ability to multitask in a time-sensitive setting. High visibility position requires professional demeanor in interactions with supervisors, employees, contractors, and customers.
