Backend Software Engineer (Node.js, Python)
About The Role
We are seeking two experienced Backend Software Engineers to join our Deliverability team based in San Francisco. This team is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the core systems that connect Front to the external world, processing millions of events related to emails, SMS, and other messaging channels. As a key member of this team, you will own critical infrastructure that our customers rely on for reliable and scalable message delivery. You will take on a technical leadership role, driving architectural decisions and building systems that are performant, scalable, and highly available. Your work will directly impact the success of our customer communications by ensuring the delivery pipeline operates seamlessly under high volume and complexity.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience in software engineering
- Proven experience building and operating high-scale, distributed backend systems
- Strong understanding of system architecture and making impactful technical decisions
- Experience with on-call responsibilities and system reliability ownership
- Proficiency in dynamic programming languages such as Javascript (Typescript), Python, Ruby, or similar
- Track record of delivering complex projects in ambiguous environments
- Experience with asynchronous work queues, high-volume storage, or high-throughput systems
- Able to evaluate trade-offs and implement pragmatic engineering solutions
- Excellent collaboration skills and a team-oriented mindset
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical lead for the Deliverability team, guiding architecture and project execution
- Own and improve high-volume email infrastructure, including ingestion, routing, and outbound delivery systems
- Lead the development of key services that support Front’s core operations, ensuring reliability and scalability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including infrastructure, product managers, and designers, to develop new features and enhance existing systems
- Drive architectural evolutions to support performance, reliability, and growth objectives
- Participate in on-call rotations, ensuring system stability and rapid incident response
- Contribute to the design and deployment of asynchronous and high-throughput systems
- Evaluate and implement engineering solutions balancing performance, cost, and complexity
