Duties

  • Interpreting drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Machining parts to specific tolerances using manual lathes, vertical mills, grinders, as well as other associated pieces of equipment.
  • Boring and machining holes to close tolerances.
  • Aligning and securing holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Selecting the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Verifying conformance of finished work-piece to specifications using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
  • Performing routine maintenance tasks on machines as required.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area and maintaining all equipment, to like new appearance, according to maintenance plans and established procedures.

Required Skills

  • Ability to skillfully operate typical machine shop equipment as well as hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments (calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, bore gages, etc.) and their application.
  • Ability to read drawings and specification with an understanding of tolerance and dimensions.
  • Knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts, and other accessories used on various machines.
  • Ability to communicate in English and be able to follow written and oral job-related instructions.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A certificate of training in Machining from a technical trade school or program.
  • A minimum of 2 years directly related and verifiable experience.
  • A general knowledge of:
    • Estimating time and materials for machine jobs.
    • Metals and the quality and machinability and uses of metals and other materials.
    • Machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
