About the Role

Under direct supervision, performs operational activities including log taking, equipment evaluation, system valve alignments, system operations, system tag outs, and all related administrative duties.

Responsibilities

• Starts, stops, adjusts, tests, and operates pumps, valves, switchgear, controls, and other components of systems as directed.
• Assists shift supervision in directing and coordinating the actions of other personnel assigned to assist in station operations.
• During reactor refueling, manipulates controls and observes nuclear and radiation monitoring instruments in accordance with procedural controls.
• Implements tagging and system out-of-service requests, including directing others to realign valves, rack out breakers, and hang tags.
• Initiates Emergency Plan in accordance with implementing procedures.
• May assist in refueling operations.
• Monitors recorders and indicators within the control room for nuclear and turbine generator systems to ensure operation within prescribed limits.
• Obtains overview data and performs calculations as required by procedure.
• Operates station communications.
• Participates as a member of the station fire brigade and may function as fire brigade leader.
• Performs operations in accordance with administrative procedures and NRC license, including shift turnovers and log maintenance.
• Monitors, controls, and operates nuclear station equipment in the control room, including:
  • Familiarity with abnormal operating event procedures and system diagnostic/restoration procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency operating procedures, including entry conditions and step-by-step actions.
  • Responds to and mitigates plant transients.
  • Responds to plant indicators and alarms in accordance with procedures, identifying emergency conditions and initiating designated actions.
  • Identifies and corrects deficient conditions using the station Corrective Action program, initiating action requests for material issues, and submitting procedure change requests.
  • Starts, stops, controls, and monitors nuclear reactor and auxiliary systems, including taking manual control of equipment as conditions warrant.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Satisfactory completion of the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) test and Basic Math and Science Test (BMST).
• Nuclear unescorted access.
• One of the following:
  • 1 year of technical experience in power production, petrochemical, or other industrial process plants (operational, maintenance, design, or training activities). Alternate experience includes HVAC, electrical, or maintenance technician roles.
  • 2 years of experience in operations or maintenance of a non-generating nuclear power facility (e.g., Navy Nuclear operations or DOE facility experience).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (engineering, engineering technology, or related science program).
  • Associate’s degree in a technical discipline (engineering, engineering technology, or related science program).
  • 43 credit hours of post-secondary education, with 75% (at least 8 courses or 32 hours) in advanced math, physics, chemistry, and/or engineering/engineering technology.

Pay

Salary starts at $48.51/hour.
