This position is located at the Automotive Skills Center within the Business Operations Division at Fort Drum, part of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR). We enhance the lives of Soldiers and their Families by providing essential support services and recreational activities that contribute to Soldier readiness and well-being.

This job is open to U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Nationals who have resided in the U.S. or U.S. territory for three or more continuous years immediately preceding the start of Federal affiliation. Applicants must live within 100 miles of Fort Drum, NY.

Duties

  • Assists senior mechanics in performing comprehensive maintenance and repairs on a variety of combustion-powered vehicles.
  • Performs removal and replacement of standard automotive parts such as spark plugs, belts, hoses, brake shoes, water pumps, and mufflers under direct supervision.
  • Aids in making crucial vehicle settings and adjustments, including setting engine idle and timing, adjusting brakes, and gapping spark plugs.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment by strictly observing all environmental, safety, and security protocols.
  • Utilizes standard and metric automotive hand and powered tools to complete repairs and maintenance tasks efficiently.

Requirements

  • Direct Deposit and Social Security Card are required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Must satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Must currently have, or be able to obtain and provide to the employing office by the start of employment, a valid driver's license.
  • Must be physically able to perform work that requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching, crawling under vehicles, and working in tight spaces or tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Must be physically able to lift parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Must be physically able to occasionally lift items 50 pounds or more with mechanical devices or with assistance from coworkers.
  • This position requires a favorably adjudicated T1/NACI background investigation.
  • A physical examination, arranged by the employer, is required prior to employment.
  • Must be willing to accept intermittent, on-call employment.
  • Work schedule will be irregular, including nights, weekends, holidays, and/or unique events.

Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent from a trade school (must be uploaded at time of application).
  • Possess creditable job-related experience in automotive repair (must be discoverable in your resume).
  • Possess six months of progressively general experience AND a minimum of six months of specialized experience in automotive work (must be clearly identified with "MM/DD/YYYY - MM/DD/YYYY" in your resume).
  • Have basic knowledge of automotive repair.
  • Ability to use standard and metric automotive hand and powered tools.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
