About the role

The Automotive Maintenance Worker class performs safety checks on vehicles and assists mechanics in performing installation, maintenance and repair work on cars and trucks. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work shift and weekend work and are subject to call-back.

Responsibilities

  • Perform safety checks on vehicles.

  • Work in an automotive shop where dirty, greasy shop conditions and fumes are regularly encountered.
  • Requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Experience: One year of experience in automotive maintenance or repair work.
  • Equivalency: Completion of one year of the required coursework in an automotive mechanic curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.
  • Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of the tools used in automotive maintenance work.
  • Skills: Ability to drive safely, perform minor maintenance work on vehicles, and follow instruction.

Pay

SALARY RANGE: $40,669.00 - $44,233.00 ANNUALLY

Employees in this class work shift and weekend work and are subject to call-back.

Additional Information

  • Background Check: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint.
  • Probation: All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
  • Eligibility: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.
  • Selection Process: All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.
  • Training and Experience: The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.
  • Examination Process: Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing: Those eligible candidates who are under final consideration for appointment to this position will be required to submit to drug and alcohol testing.
  • Criminal Background Check: Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
  • Financial Disclosure: Employees must provide their own starter set of hand tools. Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order. Employees must provide their own starter set of hand tools.
