Automattic
About the role
Explore remote job opportunities at Automattic. Work from anywhere, and help democratize publishing and commerce so anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or country.
We’re 1,442 Automatticians in 82 countries speaking 108 languages, collaborating in a remote-first culture where everyone works from the location and during the hours they choose.
Our hiring process
This is our standard process; however, the hiring steps may differ by role to ensure we choose candidates who will thrive as Automatticians.
- Application: Submit a formal application for a current job opening, giving us a sense of your communication style. We assess based on criteria that vary depending on the opening and the needs of the team. If your application advances, we’ll invite you to complete a criteria assessment designed to evaluate the specific skills and competencies we’re looking for in this role.
- Interview: One of the first steps is a Slack or Zoom interview. Some roles start with a written interview on Slack, while others require live Zoom interviews.
- Trial: Our jobs involve a paid trial in the application process, which is a short project or set of tasks assessed by our hiring teams. You’ll work on something closely aligned with the role and tackle a real problem.
- Final Interview: After a successful trial, many teams require a final interview—typically conducted by an executive leader—before proceeding to the offer stage.
- The Offer: Our HR team shares feedback from the hiring process and tenders a formal offer to join Automattic, considering your compensation expectations, interview feedback, work experience, and trial performance.
Culture and values
At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Automatticians drive grassroots change, such as facilitating private online spaces for affiliated groups and hosting monthly People Lab series for further learning.
Our dedication extends beyond Automatticians: we make our products freely available, translate them into numerous languages, offer customer support in multiple languages, and ensure accessibility across different bandwidths and devices.
Our remote-first culture
This isn’t your typical work-from-home job. We’re spread out all over the world and active 24/7, but we encourage work-life balance. We care about the work you produce, not the hours you put in.
- We track about 70% of our projects on P2-themed WordPress.com blogs, 25% in private chat rooms, and the rest on Slack.
Benefits
Making the web a better place is rewarding in its own right, but we also provide:
- Professional growth opportunities
- An open vacation policy
- Generous parental leaves
- Wellness support
- Sabbaticals
- Additional benefits that vary by location
Meetups and travel
Since the pandemic, we’ve focused on smaller group meetups for bonding and coworking. Awesome places we’ve met include San Francisco, La Paz, Budapest, Dubai, Amsterdam, and many more.
- Individual teams meet for five to seven days to brainstorm strategy and bond in locales ranging from Boulder to Buenos Aires, Las Vegas to Lisbon, Montréal to Mexico City, and Vienna to Vietnam.
- If you join us, expect to travel three to four weeks per year.
