About the role
This position reports directly to the store manager. Counter I is required to perform any or all duties of a General Store Staff as assigned by management, including using a company-provided vehicle to deliver or pick up parts and merchandise from company customers and vendors, handling incoming and outgoing merchandise in a timely manner, and keeping the store and facility clean, safe, and organized. The role also involves totaling bills, accepting payment, and providing excellent customer service in a retail store environment.
Responsibilities
- Greet each customer in a timely manner and answer the telephone within three rings
- Answer customer questions regarding price, availability, and function of merchandise
- Obtain merchandise from shelves for customers or receive merchandise selected by customers and create invoices
- Ensure each customer receives outstanding service by providing a friendly environment, solid product knowledge, and all other components of customer service
- Total price and tax on merchandise purchased by customers to determine the bill
- Accept payment and make change, including handling charge and cash invoices
- Wrap or bag merchandise for customers
- Place special orders as required by customers
- Balance cash drawer at the end of the shift (if necessary)
- Stock shelves, counters, or tables with merchandise
- Set up advertising displays or arrange merchandise to promote sales
- Stamp, mark, or tag prices on merchandise
- Bag or box orders accordingly
- Process outgoing transfers properly and timely
- Clean shelves, counters, or tables
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment by keeping shelves, pallet areas, and workstations neat; complying with OSHA and company safety procedures
- Perform custodial duties, including sweeping the warehouse/showroom, dusting shelves, organizing merchandise, cleaning and stocking restrooms, and keeping aisles clear
- Maintain grounds and parking lot
- Present a good image of the company through proper dress and attitude
- Participate in and complete sponsored and supported training
- Attend training or use electronic media to increase product knowledge
- Perform other duties and assignments as directed by management
- Maintain a satisfactory attendance record and appearance
Requirements
- Ability to work well with others and assist customers cooperatively and courteously
- Exemplary work record, including attendance
- Ability to work in a high-paced, busy atmosphere
- Related experience in the auto parts industry preferred
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Ability to read and write in English
- Must successfully complete background and criminal history checks
- Must pass a physical, human performance evaluation, and a drug test
- Good understanding of and adherence to company policies and procedures
- Must maintain regular and prompt attendance
- Attitude that supports the company’s goals and values
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Completed ASE Counterman I training course
- Meets all requirements to qualify for inclusion on AOC Approved Driver List
