Auto Messenger II
About the role
The Auto Messenger I and II positions involve operating specialized software for tracking deliveries, performing routine messenger services, and handling various types of mail and communication. These roles also include clerical tasks and may occasionally require working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Pick up, sort, and deliver United States mail and interdepartmental communication.
- Keep records of special delivery, registered, and certified mail.
- Drive auto or light trucks to perform messenger services among city departments and outlying locations and agencies.
- Perform clerical functions such as entering, modifying, updating, and querying information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One year of full-time experience as an Auto Messenger I with the City of San Diego.
- One year of full-time experience driving an auto or light truck in performing routine messenger services.
- Valid California Class C Driver's License at the time of hire.
Qualifications
City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will not be considered.

Benefits
Employees in job classifications represented by the Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
- 3.5% effective 7/1/27
- 2% effective 7/1/28
- 2% effective 1/1/29
Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
Pay
Auto Messenger II employees may be required to work rotating shifts for which they may receive an additional 5% in pay.
