About the role

Position is not entitled to the rights provided by the Merit System Rules pursuant to Arizona Law. Opens Friday, July 10, 2026; closes when filled. Salary: $100,000 – $130,000 annually based on qualifications, plus a comprehensive benefits package including membership in the Arizona State Retirement System. Requires a post-offer, pre-employment background screening.

Nature of Work

  • Attorney II: Under general supervision provides professional legal services of considerable difficulty; performs other legal services as assigned. Minimum: two years legal experience.
  • Attorney III: Under limited supervision provides professional legal services of unusual difficulty; performs other legal services as assigned. Minimum: four years legal experience.
  • Attorney IV: Under limited supervision provides professional legal services of unusual difficulty; performs other legal services as assigned. Minimum: seven years legal experience.

Responsibilities

  • Mentors junior staff.
  • Handles appeals, special actions, and post-conviction relief matters.
  • Conducts jury trials of moderate difficulty as first chair.
  • Handles complex felony cases or high-volume misdemeanor caseloads with limited supervision.
  • Initiates, engages, and defends litigation; performs legal research and administrative duties; reviews and prepares legal documents; renders legal advice; performs factual investigations; handles appeals.
  • Conducts jury trials and handles the most complex cases as first chair.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of Arizona.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and ability to be covered by county insurance.
  • Attorney II: Minimum two years relevant legal experience.
  • Attorney III: Minimum four years relevant legal experience.
  • Attorney IV: Minimum seven years relevant legal experience; significant trial or litigation experience required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to individuals with governmental experience.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of law; legal procedures and administrative proceedings; methods and practices of pleadings; judicial procedures and the rules of evidence; legal research principles, methods, materials, practices and references.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of management and supervision.
  • Considerable skill in applying legal knowledge and training; determining alternative courses of action; analyzing, appraising, and organizing facts, evidence and precedents; rendering logical, clear and effective written reports and oral arguments; presenting and arguing cases in court; handling unanticipated problems smoothly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public; follow written and verbal instruction; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Physical Requirements

  • Essential functions require lifting, manual dexterity, and ability to communicate.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force; frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 10 pounds; involves walking, standing or sitting with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Mental application: Utilizes memory for details and verbal instructions; requires emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed under general to limited supervision in a typical office or court setting with appropriate climate controls.
