Job Responsibilities
Affords daily legal advice and opinions to the General Counsel's Office and the inmate records office, particularly concerning sentencing matters.
Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials, and other agencies regarding the interpretation of the law and agency policies and procedures, including the interpretation of sentencing sheets and related documents.
Handles correspondence from attorneys, court officials, state agencies, and inmates, primarily pertaining to sentencing issues.
Defends agency interests in administrative law court cases involving inmates and sentencing issues, including investigation, case preparation, and appeals.
Represents the agency in complex and sensitive litigation, including representation of inmates.
Reviews and updates agency policy to align with relevant statutes and case law.
Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
- A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
- Membership in the South Carolina Bar and completion of rule 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
