Job Responsibilities

  • Affords daily legal advice and opinions to the General Counsel's Office and the inmate records office, particularly with sentencing matters.
  • Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials, and other agencies regarding the interpretation of the law and agency policies and procedures, including the interpretation of sentencing sheets and related documents.
  • Responds to correspondence from attorneys, court officials, state agencies, and inmates, primarily concerning sentencing issues.
  • Represents the agency in defense of cases filed by inmates in the administrative law court involving sentencing issues, including investigation, case preparation, and appeals.
  • Representation may involve complex and/or sensitive litigation.
  • Reviews agency policy and develops new agency policy that aligns with relevant statutes and case law.
  • Performs legal duties as required by the office of General Counsel and The Inmate Records Office.
  • The position involves daily contact with inmates.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • SCDC Minimum Requirements: A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in the South Carolina Bar and completion of rule 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
