About the role
The Assurance Senior will coordinate day-to-day "in-charge" duties including planning, fieldwork, and wrap-up. Responsibilities include preparing financial statements with disclosures, applying GAAP, documenting and assessing control systems, and acting as the client contact for basic questions. This role may also involve reviews and agreed-upon procedure engagements.
Responsibilities
- Control Environment:
- Apply knowledge of transactional flow and key cycles to complete audit work.
- Document, validate, and assess the design and operating effectiveness of clients’ internal control systems.
- Identify and communicate improvements to client internal controls and accounting procedures to reduce risk.
- Supervise and review the work of audit staff.
- GAAP:
- Communicate financial statement disclosure requirements to clients.
- Draft complex sets of financial statements with disclosures.
- Recognize and apply new accounting pronouncements to client situations.
- Identify, analyze, and discuss alternative GAAP with managers, senior managers, partners, and clients.
- Identify complex accounting issues and escalate them to superiors for resolution.
- Coach less experienced team members in new accounting areas.
- SEC and PCAOB:
- Review clients’ SEC filings for accuracy and completeness, ensuring documentation in workpapers.
- Prepare required communications to clients and audit committees.
- Plan and execute Section 404 internal control audits, including evaluating the control environment, designing test plans, and assessing deficiencies.
- GAAS:
- Formulate and communicate the audit plan.
- Apply GAAS to complex issues and consult others as needed.
- Employ audit skepticism and adjust testing scope as necessary.
- Utilize BDO audit manuals and document deviations from policy with approval.
- Methodology:
- Coordinate day-to-day audit execution to ensure compliance with timetables, firm policies, and budgets.
- Apply BDO audit approach and methodologies, including tools and technology.
- Identify and propose outcomes to critical audit issues.
- Research:
- Utilize internal and external research tools for routine requests.
- Research complex accounting areas, form initial opinions, and document impacts on clients and engagements.
- Document and organize findings from sources like Accounting Research Manager and BDO Assurance Manual.
- Assist in gathering information about clients’ business and accounting systems for audit strategy preparation.
- Develop draft Audit Engagement Planning Memoranda, audit programs, and budgets.
- Collaborate with engagement managers to assign responsibilities to audit staff.
- Perform other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Audit Associates.
- Supervise work assignments of Audit Associates within the engagement team.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics or a Bachelor’s degree in another field with CPA certification.
- Master’s degree in Accountancy preferred.
- Two or more years of relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.
- Eligible to sit for the CPA exams upon starting employment and actively pursuing completion.
- CPA certification preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred.
Skills
- Solid understanding of audit planning and coordination for public and/or private companies.
- Knowledge of internal accounting controls and professional standards (GAAP, GAAS, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for professionals at all levels.
- Ability to multi-task in a demanding, deadline-driven environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Superior analytical and diagnostic skills to resolve complex issues.
- Solid project management skills.
Pay
Salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Ranges by location:
- California: $88,000 - $105,000
- Colorado: $80,000 - $85,000
- Illinois: $82,000 - $90,000
- Maryland: $78,000 - $93,000
- Minnesota: $76,000 - $82,000
- Massachusetts: $81,500 - $90,000
- New Jersey: $80,000 - $95,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $80,000 - $115,000
- Ohio: $75,000 - $82,000
- Virginia: $88,000 - $98,000
- Washington: $82,000 - $95,000
- Washington DC: $80,000 - $100,000
