Associate Teaching Professor; Clinic Director - Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

About the role

The Sherman F. Levey ’57, L’59 Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) provides legal assistance to lower-income taxpayers involved in controversies with the Internal Revenue Service, including collection, examination, appeals, tax notices, account issues, and related federal tax disputes. Students represent clients in administrative proceedings before the IRS, and, when appropriate, in judicial proceedings before the United States Tax Court or federal courts.

Responsibilities

• Fulfill committee service requirements.
• Develop and/or update a class syllabus in compliance with College of Law policies.
• Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Prepare lectures, projects, and other student assignments.
• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
• Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meet all designated class periods.
• Submit all grades according to the College of Law and University regulations.
• Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Build a positive rapport with students and faculty.

Qualifications

• Candidates should have an excellent academic record and should hold a JD degree from an accredited law school.
• Preferred post-JD experience and credentials include advanced degrees, judicial clerkships, relevant legal practice, proficiency with the use of AI tools in legal practice, litigation or administrative advocacy experience, and prior teaching experience.
• A demonstrated commitment to excellent classroom teaching, student supervision, mentoring, and training new attorneys is required.
• Although scholarship is not a requirement for this position, an interest in scholarship, particularly in the area of tax law, is encouraged.
• Supervise clinic students on existing client matters, provide detailed feedback on student work, prepare classes, and work on projects and other student assignments as needed.
