About the role
Buro Happold is seeking an Associate Principal to join our talented and inclusive structural engineering team. The role is based in our New York office and requires a minimum of three days a week in-office.
Responsibilities
- Develop the reputation of Buro Happold structural engineering as the best in class across a range of size and multi-discipline projects within the region and US
- Develop project proposals and fee estimates for all project types and ensure projects are delivered profitably on schedule and within scope and budget
- Set a strong example of client care and general consultancy and support your team to do the same
- Represent Buro Happold at design team meetings, both internally and externally; providing project leadership and taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships across the region
- Lead and ensure delivery of project technical/quality reviews of specifications, reports and drawings produced by the team
- Manage relationships with internal and external clients, engineers and other stakeholders, utilizing opportunities to further work and win new commissions
- Encourage and ensure knowledge share both within the structural engineering team and on a wider basis
- Draft fee proposals and assist colleagues with proposals, negotiating additional fees with the client, where appropriate
- Work within an agreed budget, raising and/or resolving any concerns with budget spend and profit targets
- Take responsibility for the line management, leadership and mentoring of others within your team and act as an inspiring leader in the spirit of Buro Happold culture and expected behaviors
- Contribute to the operation of your local business unit, as a delegate for Principals, where required
- Work regularly across other business units and groups
- Seek opportunities to contribute to the wider firm outside of your immediate group, whether through bids, relationships or through your global discipline
Requirements
- Significant experience leading structural and multi-disciplinary projects and teams to deliver large scale commissions across a variety of sectors
- 12+ years’ experience of innovative structural building engineering design
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
- Licensed as PE and/or SE.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of US Building and Material Codes
- Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of internal and external sources, including senior management, clients, regulators, and company-wide staff
- Confident, proactive character, with a track record of taking the lead in challenging situations
- Proven track record of project delivery, client relationship management, and work winning
Qualifications

Benefits
- Salary range of $151,000 to $185,000 annual. This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
