About the Role

The School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE), part of the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, seeks a tenured/tenure-track faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor level, with a focus on Energy Systems, Storage, and Policy, to start in Fall 2026. The school offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Systems Science, as well as an executive health systems program in Manhattan, with a growing reputation and enrollment of approximately 250 undergraduates, 200 master’s students, and 200 doctoral students.

While advanced expertise in Energy Storage and/or Energy Systems and Policy is preferred, qualified applicants in other emerging areas of industrial and systems engineering—such as autonomous systems, advanced/smart manufacturing, biomanufacturing, cyber-physical systems, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and healthcare systems engineering—will also be considered.

The ideal candidate will explore recent developments in energy storage and apply systems modeling, operations optimization, integration with renewables, techno-economic analysis, sustainable materials, and recycling technologies to advance clean and efficient energy solutions. Their research should inform the design of robust energy systems, drive technological innovation, and shape policy frameworks to mitigate carbon emissions while enhancing energy affordability, occupant comfort, and system resilience. The role involves establishing an externally funded, multidisciplinary research program and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain a high-impact, externally funded research program in energy systems, storage, policy, or related fields.
  • Teach undergraduate and advanced graduate courses in systems science, industrial engineering, or specialized topics such as energy systems and policy.
  • Advance the research and academic mission of the School of SSIE through leadership, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of resilient, sustainable energy systems that address challenges in energy supply, carbon emissions, and affordability.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary research and explore emerging areas such as electricity markets, behavior change strategies, and policy frameworks for sustainable energy transitions.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in industrial engineering, systems science, or a related discipline by the appointment date.
  • Demonstrated record of research, including securing external funding and publishing scholarly work.
  • Effective leadership skills and the ability to initiate and sustain a multidisciplinary research program.

Qualifications

  • Education or experience in Energy Storage and/or Energy Systems and Policy (preferred).
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Experience interacting with diverse student populations, including first-generation, international, and underrepresented students, and a commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia.
