About the role

The Mechanical Engineer position within the Plant Engineering Services Section of the Operations and Maintenance Department at the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is seeking an individual with strong organizational, communication, and project management skills. This role involves working closely with various maintenance teams to support preventive maintenance tasks, manage consultant contracts, and provide engineering support for operations and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Asset and Maintenance Program Engineering Support: Collaborate with maintenance personnel to identify and define preventive maintenance tasks, and manage consultant contracts for operations and maintenance documentation.
  • Maintenance and Operations Engineering Support: Provide engineering support to water operations, electrical, mechanical, and control system maintenance personnel, investigating and defining equipment replacement needs, and coordinating repair projects.
  • Project Management: Oversee and manage project implementations, using schedules, financial information systems, and work management systems to monitor progress, and engage staff across multiple departments to support project goals.
  • Written Communication: Prepare concise and accurate engineering reports, presentations, correspondence, and memoranda for various audiences including EBMUD staff, government agencies, contractors, and the public.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or closely related engineering, or a California EIT Certificate.
  • Experience: Four years of professional mechanical or closely related engineering experience.
  • Registration: California registration as a Professional Mechanical Engineer.
  • Other: Valid California driver's license, willingness to work overtime, and physical characteristics for office and field duties.

Benefits

The salary range is $13,124 per month increasing to $15,952 after 42 months. Flexible/hybrid work from home schedule may be available for some positions in this job classification.

Selection Process

  • Submit a completed EBMUD application and required supplemental question responses online by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2026.
  • Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part to advance to the next step in the selection process.
  • Candidates who pass the initial evaluation will be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for August or September 2026.
  • Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list for further consideration to fill current and future vacancies.
  • The probation period for this position is 12 months.
