About the role

Associate Engineer in Transmission System Planning assists in transmission system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of Eversource's transmission system. The role supports power system study model development and maintenance and performs technical analysis under guidance. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, stability, electromagnetic transient, and short circuit. Expected start date: Spring 2027. The Transmission System Planning team ensures Eversource’s future bulk power system serves customers safely and reliably, meets applicable national and state interconnection standards, and determines needed upgrades to comply with state regulatory and national/regional standards. The role supports development and analysis of electric transmission system models, evaluates system performance under various operating conditions, and is designed for recent graduates with foundational power systems and electrical engineering knowledge seeking hands‑on experience in utility planning and reliability studies.

Responsibilities

  • Supports development and maintenance of system models for transmission studies under guidance of senior engineers.
  • Collection and review of forecast loads to be included in the model.
  • Collection, modification, and review of electric system parameters: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, system topology.
  • Collection, modification, and review of electric system modeling for steady state, stability, short circuit, and EMT analyses.
  • Assists with transmission planning studies across Eversource service territories:
    • Preparation of study scopes based on determined study assumptions.
    • Verification of technical information and models according to modeling processes.
    • Application of corporate planning standards with applicable NERC, NPCC, and ISO‑NE reliability standards and criteria.
    • Supporting solutions development to mitigate identified significant adverse impacts by testing solution alternatives as directed.
    • Providing support to senior engineers for interfacing with ISO‑NE staff, DER and Distribution System Planning, line and substation engineering, asset management, siting, environmental and permitting, operations, etc., to determine system impacts and proposed solutions.
    • Documentation of study results in study reports.
    • Assisting senior engineers with study updates and presenting results to regulatory agencies, customers, and affected parties.
  • Other supporting tasks: study process automation for routines with transmission analysis tools.
  • Clearly and effectively communicates analysis results verbally and in writing.
  • Assists with development of training modules.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non‑routine projects with minimal oversight, independently managing schedules and interfaces.
  • Develops positive working relationships to coordinate work activities.
