Associate Director
About the role
Assists the executive director in planning and developing all aspects of API CO’s activities where assistance is requested or assignment is delegated. Works with and assists the executive director in executing programs to influence issues of concern to the industry, including legislative, regulatory, local government, and federal matters. Builds partnerships with relevant state and local officials and engages with third parties, both non-traditional and traditional allies, to promote API’s strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the executive director, manages assigned regulatory, legislative, and local government issues.
- Anticipates and identifies emerging and potential issues impacting the petroleum and natural gas industry.
- Plans, develops, and executes programs or activities to address industry issues on behalf of member companies.
- Provides leadership in developing the petroleum and natural gas industry’s regulatory and local government priorities for the state and stays informed on federal priorities.
- Works with the executive director to ensure activities align with industry priorities and keeps advisory committees and members of the state working group informed.
- Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with stakeholders, allied businesses, industries, and key constituencies to build ad hoc coalitions for mutual interests.
- Cultivates relationships with API members, regulatory agencies, county commissioners, city council members, and planning staff.
- Assists in preparing testimony, data, position papers, comment letters, and other communications to promote the industry’s position.
- Identifies emerging regulatory and local issues and collaborates with the executive director, communications, and public affairs teams to develop issue management strategies.
Key Relationships
Manages issues assigned by the executive director, including leading efforts at the local level and in regulatory proceedings. Requires close collaboration with API and industry personnel, government officials, key private sector constituencies, professional and non-profit organizations, the media, and others.
Requirements
- 7 to 10 years of experience in a similar role and subject matter expertise.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant area or equivalent work experience.
- Working knowledge of state and local government operations.
- Understanding of the petroleum and natural gas industry is preferred.
- Excellent written, oral, and analytical skills.
Physical Requirements
- Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer.
- Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc., on occasion.
- Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines.
- Transport items and equipment up to 10 lbs. on occasion.
Travel Requirements
Up to 25% travel required.
