About the role
This role will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the power systems (including backups such as diesel generators), HVAC systems, Fire Prevention and other critical infrastructure for our data centers and computer rooms spanning multiple locations. HVAC systems reside in at least eight locations and approximately 50 IDF’s, and this role requires a thorough, hands-on engineer with experience managing complex systems in critical environments. Onsite presence is required for inspection, testing and maintenance activities.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the operation of electrical power distribution systems, including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), main power grids, and sub-distribution networks for two data centers and four computer rooms.
- Ensure optimal load balancing, system uptime, and safety compliance of all power systems including annual and semi-annual inspections and preventative maintenance planning and execution.
- Maintain backup power systems, including diesel generators, battery banks, and fuel systems, ensuring operational readiness at all times.
- Manage preventative maintenance, testing, and emergency response protocols for power-related infrastructure.
- Ensure the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, including cooling units, air handling units, CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units, and chillers, meets appropriate temperatures and humidity levels for data center environments.
- Conduct regular inspections and assessments with diagnostics to maintain efficient cooling and identify areas for improvement.
- Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, airflow) and adjust systems to maintain optimal operating conditions.
- Ensure operation and maintenance of fire prevention systems for the data centers in partnership with the asset protection and building engineering teams.
- Conduct regular inspections and testing of fire prevention systems with partners in building engineering, vendors, and relevant government authorities.
- Respond to system alarms, investigate issues, and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Maintain detailed logs of work performed, system status, and any incidents to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Support projects for system upgrades, new installations, and capacity planning to meet business growth needs.
- Use support and maintenance schedules to provide annual budgets for building management systems and operations hardware lifecycle management.
- Lead the emergency response for power outages, cooling failures, or system failures to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Gather information from local power providers (AEP/Columbus Power/ Direct Energy).
- Conduct regular training for team members on emergency protocols and drills, ensuring readiness for any unplanned event.
- Ensure all backup systems, including generators and UPS, are properly inspected, tested and maintained per operational standards.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding power and HVAC systems, including building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
- Conduct routine inspections of all systems to ensure they meet safety and operational standards.
- Ensure that all data center equipment meets or exceeds industry standard methodologies and is capable of supporting 24/7 operations without failure.
- Set all processes and monitor compliance with processes for work conducted in the data centers and related closets.
- Work with inspectors for variety of services (ex. Insurance, building compliance) to accurately record the features of all data center systems.
- Manage relationships with external vendors and contractors for regular service agreements, emergency repairs, and equipment installations.

Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience in facilities engineering, particularly in power systems, backup power (diesel generators), and HVAC management for critical environments such as data centers or large-scale IT facilities.
- Experience with troubleshooting and maintaining UPS, diesel generators, HVAC systems, and building management systems (BMS).
- Experience working with external contractors and managing vendor relationships.
- Solid understanding of power distribution systems, electrical infrastructure, diesel generators, UPS, and HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with data center cooling systems, including CRAC units, chillers, and air flow management.
- Proficient with facility management software and tools (e.g., SiteScan, CMMS).
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations (e.g., NFPA, OSHA, ISO).
- Relevant certifications such as HVAC, electrical, or facilities management certifications (e.g., LEED, PMP, HVAC, or Electrical licensing) are a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex technical issues in a fast, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to report on system statuses, incidents, and project updates to senior management.
- Available for after-hours support, including on-call and emergency response.

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Management or another related field; or equivalent combination or relevant education and experience.

Pay
$73,000.00 – $107,800.00
