About the role

We are looking for an Assistant Utility Operator to monitor and operate ash and other auxiliary plant equipment from the field, ensuring safe, efficient, and continuous plant operations. This role involves recognizing and mitigating operating difficulties, adapting to changing plant conditions, and minimizing downtime.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs to ash handling and other assigned auxiliary systems.
  • Operate plant equipment and systems with assistance and guidance to ensure proper functioning.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing, including using in-situ intercom systems, two-way radios, or face-to-face interactions.
  • Anticipate typical problems, identify potential or recurring issues, and take appropriate action.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and assist in diagnosing problem areas.
  • Operate industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer loaders, and other mobile equipment.
  • Maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating professionally with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers, and management.

Requirements

  • Mechanical abilities sufficient to perform equipment maintenance and minor repairs, such as replacement of shear pins, valve repacking, strainer cleaning, and general preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Hoisting License (1C/2A) within 9 months of hire.

Work Environment

  • Noise in work environment.
  • Physical demands include:
    • Standing, sitting for prolonged periods, walking, and handling tools or equipment with fine motor skills.
    • Reaching with hands and arms, climbing and walking on heights often greater than 4 feet.
    • Stooping, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, and crawling.
    • Ascending and descending stairs and stationary vertical ladders as part of normal work and emergency egress.
    • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • Moving about all areas of the plant, including catwalks, deck grating, and uneven surfaces.
    • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception (corrected or otherwise).
    • Operating a 1.5-inch fire hose at 125 psi line pressure to extinguish fires.
    • Operating fire extinguishing equipment ranging from handheld extinguishers to 200 lb portable units.
    • Accessing confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12" by 16" manways.
  • Required PPE includes:
    • Negative pressure respirator, positive pressure respirator, or self-contained breathing apparatus (steel or composite bottle).
    • Hardhat, approved safety shoes, eye protection, rubber suit and gloves, chemical-resistant suit, heat-resistant outerwear, flame-resistant outerwear, approved hearing protection, gloves, and safety harness.
