Assistant Utility Operator

About the role

We are looking for an Assistant Utility Operator to monitor and operate ash and other auxiliary plant equipment from the field to maintain safe, efficient, and continuous plant operations. Duties include recognizing and mitigating operating difficulties, adapting to changing plant conditions to maximize safety and efficiency, and minimizing downtime.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and minor repairs to ash handling and other assigned auxiliary systems.
• Operate plant equipment and systems with assistance and guidance to ensure proper functioning.
• Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing, including using in-situ intercom systems, two-way radios, or face-to-face interactions.
• Anticipate typical problems, identify potential or recurring issues, and take appropriate action.
• Troubleshoot equipment and assist in diagnosing problem areas.
• Operate other equipment, including industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer loaders, and other mobile equipment.
• Maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating professionally with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers, and management.

Requirements

• Mechanical abilities sufficient to perform equipment maintenance and minor repairs, such as replacement of shear pins, valve repacking, strainer cleaning, and general preventative maintenance.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime.
• For the State of Massachusetts: Must hold a Massachusetts Hoisting License (1C/2A) or obtain it within 9 months of hire.

Physical Demands

• Stand or sit for prolonged periods.
• Walk and handle tools, equipment, and fine motor skills.
• Reach with hands and arms, climb, and work at heights often greater than 4 feet.
• Stoop, kneel, bend, push, pull, and crawl.
• Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders as part of normal work and emergency egress.
• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Move about all areas of the plant, including catwalks, deck grating, and uneven surfaces.
• Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception (corrected or otherwise).
• Operate a 1.5-inch fire hose at 125 psi line pressure to extinguish fires.
• Operate fire extinguishing equipment ranging from handheld extinguishers to 200 lb portable units.
• Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12" by 16" manways.
