About the role

The Assistant Provost for Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility serves as SUNY's system-level EIT Accessibility Officer, leading the implementation of SUNY's EIT Accessibility Policy across 64 campuses to ensure that SUNY's digital resources are accessible.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SUNY's lead expert and a resource to the EIT Accessibility Officers at our 64 campuses, including coordination of system-wide activities and events.
  • Serve as the EIT Accessibility Officer for SUNY System Administration, establishing processes and systems to ensure that SUNY System Administration staff comply with SUNY's EIT Accessibility policy and applicable accessibility laws and regulations.
  • Facilitate the establishment of system-level services and support to ensure that all digital content and platforms in use by faculty, staff, and students are accessible.
  • Collaborate with the SUNY Center for Professional Development and System Administration EIT Accessibility Team to develop and deliver professional development programs on EIT Accessibility to build the capability of campus faculty, staff, and students.
  • Collaborate with SUNY Office of General Counsel and other allied areas across System Administration to devise policies and guidance on EIT Accessibility.
  • Work with the Office of Risk Management to monitor and track campus compliance with SUNY's EIT Accessibility Policy, NYS laws, and Federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Offices of Student Success and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to develop and support initiatives advancing EIT accessibility.
  • Support and facilitate the work of the EIT Accessibility Advisory Committee, EIT Accessibility Officers, and all related committees and working groups to advance compliance with SUNY's EIT Accessibility policy.
  • Convene and facilitate SUNY community events and activities for the sharing of information, resources, and best practices across the system.
  • Develop and distribute surveys, prepare summary reports, and compile compendiums of information such as population data and best practices for use by campuses and SUNY System Administration to inform policy and advocacy work.
  • Represent SUNY in NYS, regional, and national organizations for EIT Accessibility in higher education.
  • Lead change management efforts to support campuses in adopting and sustaining EIT accessibility policies and practices.
  • Support campuses in establishing and maintaining EIT accessibility governance frameworks and operational procedures.
  • Track and support campus progress in developing comprehensive EIT accessibility programs and services.

Requirements

  • Possess exceptional executive leadership and organizational skills to manage multiple high-impact projects and priorities across the SUNY system.
  • Advanced knowledge of the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and a fundamental understanding of all applicable accessibility laws and policies.
  • Strong project management, facilitation, collaboration, and team leadership skills, with proven experience engaging with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in adjacent organizations, in cross-functional committees, and across a large, distributed organization to support programs, services, and activities.
  • Experience in checking and remediating electronic documents for accessibility using accessibility checking tools built into applications for creating electronic documents, such as MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus continued professional development in digital accessibility.
  • Experience with strategic plan development, execution, and monitoring progress toward plan objectives.
  • Experience leading a team responsible for accessibility compliance.
  • Experience in digital/web accessibility, preferably within a large university setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA and other relevant accessibility standards.
  • Experience conducting accessibility audits using audit and quality assurance tools and processes.
  • Experience coordinating website accessibility remediation and developing corrective action plans.
  • Experience developing accessibility training materials and resources.
  • Proficiency with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ARIA) and web content management systems.
  • Experience with assistive technologies (JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA).
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting 3rd-party vendor Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates/Accessibility Conformance Reports (VPAT/ACR).
