Assistant Professor: Voice-Verse/Drama Department

About the role

The Department of Drama within the College of Visual and Performing Arts—a highly ranked BFA program uniquely integrated with Syracuse Stage, a major regional theater—invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Voice/Verse to begin August 2027. We seek a dynamic artist and educator to join the Acting area within our nationally recognized BFA acting program, with responsibility for a sequential voice and text curriculum grounded in a recognized vocal pedagogy. The successful candidate will bring both scholarly grounding and an active career as a performer or a voice, text, or dialect coach to the training of our BFA actors.

Responsibilities

• Teach in a multi-semester sequence for BFA acting majors, progressing from foundational vocal release and breath work through advanced text and heightened language work (Shakespeare and other verse drama)
• Provide voice, text, and dialect coaching for department productions
• Advise students and contribute to curriculum development within the Acting Area
• Maintain an active record of professional creative work, scholarship, or both, consistent with the expectations of a research university
• Participate in department, college, and university service

Qualifications

• MFA, DFA, or PhD in Theatre, Voice, or a closely related field (candidates with an MA and significant documented professional experience will also be considered)
• Demonstrated training or certification in a recognized vocal pedagogy such as Fitzmaurice Voicework, Linklater Voice Training, Knight-Thompson Speechwork, Roy Hart, or Rodenburg
• Demonstrated teaching excellence in voice for the actor at the college or conservatory level preferred
• Experience teaching and/or professionally working with verse and heightened text, including Shakespeare and classical repertoire
• A record of scholarly or creative contributions to the field of voice pedagogy
• Fluency in IPA and demonstrated experience teaching or coaching dialects preferred
• Additional expertise in a drama-related field, i.e. directing, play/screen writing, theater history, movement, etc.
• Demonstrated experience as a positive and proactive collaborator
• Evidence of communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies that maximize effectiveness with many different groups of students, colleagues, and community members
