Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology

About the role

The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full‑time faculty position as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Comparative Ophthalmology. The appointment may be made on the Clinical or Tenure track, depending on the candidate’s background, experience, qualifications, and career goals. The successful candidate will join an internationally recognized team of four veterinary ophthalmologists (all ACVO Diplomates, two of whom are also ECVO Diplomates) providing clinical care within the UW Veterinary Care hospital. The Comparative Ophthalmology faculty support the training of three veterinary ophthalmology residents and collaborate with house officers, fourth‑year veterinary students, dedicated veterinary technicians, and a veterinary technician assistant.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical service, including leading resident‑based or student‑based rounds (approximately 3‑5 hours per week) and participating in emergency and after‑hours clinic duty.
• Deliver classroom lectures and laboratory teaching for veterinary students and house officers, with teaching duties equitably distributed across the section.
• Engage in basic, translational, and/or clinical research that advances the field of ophthalmology and vision science.
• Contribute to departmental and school service activities.
• Allocate time approximately as follows: 40‑50 % clinical responsibilities, 10‑20 % non‑clinical teaching, 20‑30 % research, and up to 10 % service.
• Tenure‑track faculty are assigned 20‑22 weeks of clinical duties (with extensions possible for promotion and tenure considerations).

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent degree, with eligibility for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin by the start date.
• American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) Board‑Certified Diplomate or board‑eligible after completion of an ophthalmology residency at the time of appointment.
• Candidates who are European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) Diplomates or board‑eligible at the time of appointment will also be considered.
