Assistant Professor of Social Work
The School of Social Work at Belmont University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Social Work. This position is full-time and tenure-track.
About the Role
Belmont University seeks a highly qualified individual with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, a doctorate or significant progress toward a doctoral degree, and a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, and student mentorship. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical expertise and experience in curriculum development or program administration.
Responsibilities
- Teach across the social work curriculum in both the BSW and MSW programs, including foundational courses and specialized areas aligned with the candidate’s professional expertise in clinical practice, leadership, and community engagement.
- Advise and mentor BSW and MSW students in research and other course-related projects.
- Engage in activities that support the mission and vision of Belmont University, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the School of Social Work.
- Participate in service through school, college, and university committees and initiatives.
- Demonstrate teaching excellence, including effective use of the learning management system (Canvas), timely feedback and grading, and clear communication with students regarding course expectations and progress.
- Engage in scholarly activity and professional development.
- Advising students in course selection and degree completion.
- Participating in community engagement and service (e.g., board membership, professional trainings, speaking engagements, or service to local faith communities).
- Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration on interdisciplinary initiatives, program development, and university-wide projects.
- Able to abide by all relevant university and/or department procedures and policies.
- Managing online grading system.
- Timely submission of book orders, if textbooks required.
- Maintaining regular office hours.
Qualifications
- A demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and student mentorship.
- Knowledge of principles, methods, and current developments in the social work education, including familiarity with the Council on Social Work Education EPAS 2022.
- A strong commitment to student-centered teaching, learning, and formation.
- Experience in curriculum development or program administration is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
- Demonstrated capacity to engage in high quality scholarly activity.
- Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
- Skilled in the use of computers, Internet resources, and MS Office software.
- Ability to learn relevant sections of Canvas and BannerWeb, Belmont University’s Learning Management System and online integrated database system for student grading.
- Ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.
- Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators, and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the programs and services offered by Belmont University.
- Interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations.
- Ability to thrive in an environment of hard work.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
Required Education
A Master of Social Work (MSW) is required, and a doctorate or significant progress toward a doctoral degree is required. A Ph.D. or a DSW is strongly preferred.
Required Experience
Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in clinical social work practice and the ability to teach across the BSW and MSW curricula. Experience or demonstrated leadership in research and teaching is highly valued. A minimum of two years of post-master's practice experience is strongly preferred.
