Assistant Professor of Social Work
About the role
The Hood College Department of Sociology and Social Work, housed in the Ruth Whitaker Holmes School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track social work position beginning in January 2027 or August 2027. The Department awards a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work and is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Responsibilities
- Demonstrated ability or strong potential for success in teaching across the generalist social work curriculum.
- Teach the equivalent of 21 credits per year using curriculum design in alignment with CSWE EPAS 2022 and a student-centered, equitable and inclusive pedagogy.
- Facilitation of the Field Education Practicum and Seminar and duties related to Faculty Field Education Liaison.
- Advise social work majors from our diverse student body and contribute in other ways to the social work program, the department, and the School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, including the accreditation/reaffirmation and field education processes.
- Conduct and publish field specific research to enhance the general body of knowledge in social work.
- Research related to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work practice and/or education is of particular interest to the department.
- Collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students in research.
- Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.
- Work in partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement to pursue grant funding opportunities as appropriate.
- Support and participate in college committees and professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the strategic goals of the institution.
- Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
- Serve as an active member of the school, department, and Hood College community.
Qualifications
- By the position start date, applicants must have a doctorate in social work (DSW/PhD) or a related field and a master’s degree in social work from CSWE accredited institutions, at least two years of postmaster’s social work practice experience, and some teaching experience in an accredited social work program.
- Candidates should be licensed, or license-eligible, as a social worker in Maryland.
- Candidates must have demonstrated experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching undergraduates, CSWE reaffirmation, and to candidates whose research interests support and encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work practice and/or education.

Technology Skills: Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.
Language Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills: Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Compensation
The salary for this position ranges from $55,800 to $62,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Additional compensation for work completed beyond the minimum contracted teaching load may be provided.
