About the Department

The Department of Economics at San José State University enrolls nearly 340 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students. About 32% of our students are first-generation, and our student body is diverse: 34% Asian, 33% White, and 23% Hispanic/Latinx. We offer:

  • 4+1 Accelerated Master Program

All BS and MA programs are STEM-designated. The department includes 7 tenured faculty and 15 lecturer faculty, with expertise spanning applied econometrics, behavioral economics, experimental economics, labor economics, health economics, development economics, urban economics, law and economics, economic history, and history of economic thought. The department hosts the only Experimental Economics Lab in the CSU system, providing unique opportunities for hands-on research and learning.

The Economics Department is part of the College of Social Sciences, which is committed to equitable and inclusive teaching and learning. The College supports faculty development around asset-based, holistic student success and scholarship of engagement addressing community issues.

About San José State University

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop curriculum in areas of specialization as well as core economics courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintain an active research agenda and contribute to the discipline through peer-reviewed scholarship and professional engagement.
  • Engage students in applied projects and supervise student research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines.
  • Participate in shared governance through department, college, and university committees and service assignments.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Economics expected by the date of appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of effective teaching.
  • Demonstration of research potential and an established agenda for future research.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research focus in one or more of the following fields: Macroeconomics, International Economics, Forecasting in Big Data and Machine Learning, and AI Dynamic Modeling.
  • Commitment to student success and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Record of teaching excellence and relevant teaching experience serving diverse student populations.
  • Commitment to or experience in securing external funding.
  • Ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate economics courses.
