Assistant Patient Care Manager, NICU, Full-Time, Nights

About the Role

Join the Margaret M. and George A. Stephen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Comer Children's Hospital, one of the largest NICUs in the Midwest with approximately 1,000 admissions annually. This 100% onsite role is based in the greater Chicagoland area and supports the operations and patient flow of a designated Care Center on your shift.

The NICU features 47 Level III tertiary care beds and 18 Level II convalescent beds, with the capability to provide Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for up to three infants at a time.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations and patient flow of a designated Care Center on your shift.
• Complete daily or shift-specific quality audits and manage Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) boards.
• Facilitate daily huddles with staff and direct the delivery of quality, patient-centered care in a financially responsible manner.
• Assume responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Patient Care Manager (PCM).
• Participate in the interview and selection process of staff and help oversee orientation of new hires.
• Maximize care efficiency and throughput, and monitor a budget (e.g., supplies).
• Participate in ongoing evaluation of productivity and round to assess and address customer and patient satisfaction.
• Monitor and report sentinel events, maintain survey and regulatory readiness, and perform audits.
• Monitor and promote workplace safety requirements and promote intra/interdepartmental communication.
• Collaborate with other service lines and manage projects by identifying roles, resources, timelines, and milestones.
• Support a structure of shared governance and assist with conducting staff evaluations/MAX conversations.
• Monitor staff for fitness for duty and initiate/deliver corrective actions (e.g., written warnings).
• Mentor and coach staff, and participate in Quality Improvement (QI) processes.
• Perform other duties as requested by the PCM or senior management.

Requirements

• Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher.
• Current Illinois RN license.
• Minimum of two years nursing experience.
• Minimum of one year clinical experience in the NICU.
• Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree.
• Specialty certifications.
• NICU experience starting at Level III.
• Experience working at an academic medical center and in a unionized environment.
• Charge nurse experience with demonstrated leadership skills and/or equivalent experience.

Schedule

• Full-time, 1.0 FTE.
• Night Shift, (4) 10-hour shifts.
• Rotating Weekends approximately every 4-6 weeks.

Pay

The pay range reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected for the position, based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and current market data. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
