About the Role
The Assistant Nurse Manager provides administrative support and direct patient care based on patient acuity and staffing needs. This role supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing daily unit operations, ensuring high-quality patient care, and maintaining a well-coordinated team environment. Responsibilities include staffing, scheduling, resource management, mentorship, and resolving issues as they arise. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager is accountable for patient care activities, department operations, and staff function.
Responsibilities
Standards of Care
- Assessment: Assist in gathering and analyzing data on patient needs, staffing levels, and resource availability. Monitor daily patient and staff activities to assess workflow.
- Diagnosis: Identify challenges in patient care and staff performance, supporting the Nurse Manager in recognizing potential issues impacting patient safety, quality of care, and unit effectiveness.
- Planning: Collaborate with the Nurse Manager to develop and coordinate unit plans, including scheduling, resource allocation, and goal-setting. Help outline steps for implementing unit procedures and patient care standards.
- Implementation: Support the Nurse Manager in executing care plans, coordinating with team members, enforcing policies and procedures, and ensuring smooth daily operations. Provide direct support to staff and step in for patient care as needed.
- Evaluation: Participate in evaluating patient outcomes, staff performance, and unit efficiency. Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager and suggest improvements based on observed results.
Standards of Professional Performance
- Quality of Care and Administrative Practice: Assist the Nurse Manager in evaluating the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. Set goals for self and unit, complete reports in a timely manner, and problem-solve to assist staff in developing appropriate skills.
- Performance Appraisal: Evaluate own performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statutes, and organizational criteria. Assist the Nurse Manager in completing employee evaluations as required.
- Education: Acquire and maintain current knowledge in administrative and clinical practice. Seek additional knowledge and skills appropriate for the practice setting and expand experience to maintain a relevant skill base.
- Collegiality: Foster a professional environment by sharing knowledge, acting as a role model/mentor, and contributing to mutual respect and effective communication.
- Ethics: Base decisions and actions on ethical principles. Support the system in addressing ethical issues, and maintain privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organizational data.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers, and other stakeholders. Facilitate collaboration within the nursing service and organization.
- Resource Utilization: Evaluate and administer resources, including assisting the Nurse Manager with staffing and scheduling of personnel.

Requirements
- Current NYS nursing licensure.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in an acute hospital setting.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 90 days for telemetry and critical care areas.
Preferred: BSN strongly recommended.
Physical Demands
- Appreciable physical effort required, including lifting, reaching, and stooping.
- Required to be on feet much of the time.
Infection Control
- Performs all aspects of universal precautions when engaging in patient care.
- Exposure Category: Category I (tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues).
