Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitate practice time to include such responsibilities as implementing drills and meet plans into practices, offering input for meet strategies.
- The Assistant Men’s Wrestling Coaching Instructor will assist players in the learning process and keep track of players & punctuality and participation in practices when needed.
- While working primarily with the men’s wrestling program, the Assistant Men’s Wrestling Coaching Instructor will support the women’s wrestling program as administered by the Head Men’s and Women’s Wrestling Coaching Instructor.
- Implement and lead elements of practices and meets to include preparation, effective execution of drills, one-on-one development work with athletes as warranted and fulfillment of game day responsibilities.
- Assist the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor with the development of strategies for a successful program including well-organized practice plans and participation in the development and execution of meet strategies.
- Make responsible purchasing decisions as directed by the Head Men’s and Women’s Wrestling Coaching Instructor.
- Aid in monitoring academic progress, organizing and supervising study tables, and meeting with individual student-athletes to promote academic success and ensure compliance with university and NCAA academic standards.
- Mentor student-athletes as to proper conduct and decorum.
- Actively support the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor’s philosophy and assist in communicating this philosophy with all stakeholders.
- Aid in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, and the tracking of them through the Slate system for the women’s wrestling program.
- Support the coaching staff in developing and implementing official visit itineraries for prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA requirements.
- Aid in the development of community outreach programs, and promotional activities in collaboration with internal staff, and assist in approved fundraising activity as designated by the head coach.
- Support administrative requirements for the team including travel arrangements and itineraries for the men’s wrestling program.
- Work in conjunction with the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor and the Strength and Condition Instructor to implement targeted development and training programs appropriate to the specific needs of athletes and the team.
- Attend rules education, sessions and complete necessary forms for compliance upon request.
- Follow proper procedures for purchasing and resource allocation and monitor spending.
- Participate in pre-season and post-season meetings and programs as appropriate.
- Develop and provide instructor-led rules training to team, athletic department and others upon request.
- Represent department and institution to internal and external constituents. Responsible for positive public relations and communications with constituents.
- Follow all University, North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA policies and regulations.
- Meet all deadlines for paperwork.
- Exhibit enthusiasm towards athletes and display respect for the entire program (i.e. officials, opponents, parents, schools, property, equipment, etc.).
- Dress appropriately and professionally for games, practices, recruit/family visits and other school/athletic functions.
- Foster school spirit by promoting other sports.
- Maintain fair, consistent, and appropriate relationships with student athletes.
- Maintain composure and exemplary conduct during practice and games.
- Participate in athletics training and professional development programs and coaching staff meetings.
- All other duties as assigned by the Head Coaching Instructor.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Collegiate Wrestling Experience as a student-athlete.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain certifications in CPR and AED.
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies.
- Understand and comply with NCAA, North Coast Athletic Conference, and University rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of one (1) year of collegiate coaching experience or two (2) years successful coaching experience as a head or assistant coach in high school or club teams or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate students in a positive manner.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and organize effectively, teach fundamentals and techniques associated with the sport and experience with teams that are competitive and show evidence of being well coached.
- Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership and to serve as a positive role model as a coach and colleague.
- Successful prior participation in the sport at the high school, college, club or professional level.
