About the Role
The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach supports the teaching, coaching, training, performance, and recruitment of student-athletes for the varsity men’s basketball team.
Responsibilities
- Assist the head coach in teaching and coaching student-athletes.
- Manage components of the varsity men’s basketball program, including coaching, recruiting, office duties, and video oversight.
- Identify and recruit academically qualified student-athletes while reinforcing their goal to graduate.
- Support the endeavors and advancement of the Missouri Southern Athletics Department.
- Operate within the guidelines of Missouri Southern State University, MIAA, and NCAA rules and regulations.
- Communicate with members of the media when the head coach is unavailable.
- Perform athletic administration and support activities, including attending department meetings.
- Collaborate with medical staff (athletic trainers, team physicians, and strength and conditioning coaches) to ensure the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes.
- Develop and maintain quality relationships within the community, both on and off-campus.
- Promote the academic and athletic well-being of student-athletes.
- Conduct summer camps and clinics, if warranted.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum 1-2 years of collegiate basketball coaching experience (preferred).
- Competitive background in collegiate basketball (preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the institution, MIAA, and Division II athletics (preferred).
- Experience working with a diverse population.
- Current certification in first aid, CPR, and AED use (preferred at hire; required before participation in countable athletically related activities).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet insurance requirements for driving university vehicles.
Skills
- Ability to teach basketball skills to collegiate athletes and monitor their progress.
- Proficiency in using video and technical equipment as teaching tools.
- Ability to present information effectively to management, public groups, or boards of directors.
- Experience with academic success programs and strategies for student-athletes.
- Proficiency in using office equipment (copy machines, multi-line telephones) and computers for data entry, word processing, and technical applications.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands (including computer keyboard), reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly attend basketball games and conduct practice sessions in environments with moderate to loud noise levels.
