Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor I or II

About the role

Supervises a group of maintenance and/or clerical employees responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Work requires responding to emergency notifications on an as-needed basis and contact with the public. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Assigns and oversees the work of section and contracted crews; ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
• Assists in budget preparation for the section.
• Assists in issuing driveway permits and estimating the size of drainage pipes for driveways.
• Assists with planning, coordinating, and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
• Completes reports on damaged railings and bridges.
• Handles public complaints.
• Inspects maintenance contract work.
• Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress, and work completed by the crews and contractors.
• Maintains records on materials, supplies, and personnel.
• May assist with survey-related activities.
• May operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
• Oversees scheduling of equipment, material, and personnel necessary for section projects.
• Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
• Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Education: High School Graduate or equivalent in general education.

Experience:

• Assistant Maintenance Supervisor I: 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work and 1 year of supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
• Assistant Maintenance Supervisor II: 6 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work and 2 years of supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.

Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.

Skills

Extensive knowledge of:

• Incident management procedures.
• Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
• Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
• The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Expert skill in:

• Operating light and heavy highway equipment.

• Supervising technical staff.

• Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.

Conditions of Employment

• Must pass a pre-employment physical as this job has been identified as physically demanding.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
• This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond during emergency situations.

Pay

Assistant Maintenance Supervisor I: $57,614.00 - $93,138.00 per year.

Assistant Maintenance Supervisor II: $61,184.00 - $99,658.00 per year.
