The Assistant Highway Maintenance Manager supports key projects that keep Fayette County’s roadways in top condition by guiding maintenance operations, collaborating with crews, and contributing to long-term planning. This role strengthens infrastructure, improves travel safety, and supports local communities.

About the role

This position assists the County Maintenance Manager by helping to plan, supervise, and oversee maintenance operations throughout an assigned area of Fayette County. You will ensure that roadway projects, crew activities, environmental responsibilities, and operational needs are managed with efficiency and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop programs, estimates, and plans for surface treatments, patching, stockpiling, snow removal, signage, and bridge work
  • Oversee general and specialized crews, including the Surface Treatment Crew, during maintenance and minor construction activities
  • Prepare drafts of long-range, annual, monthly, and weekly plans to support maintenance operations
  • Evaluate requests, estimates, and funding needs for personnel, equipment, materials, and future projects
  • Develop, negotiate, monitor, and assess agility agreements while working with local partners to set project priorities
  • Conduct inspections of operational activities, subordinate supervisors, and contracted maintenance or construction work

Schedule

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • No telework option available

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Coordinator, Roadway Programs Coordinator, or Transportation Construction Manager 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Six years of technical experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or maintenance of heavy equipment used in highway construction projects; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent

Other Requirements:

  • Must meet the PA residency requirement
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
