Assistant General Counsel

About the role

The person in this role will work with the General Counsel and other senior executives to develop and implement corporate strategic and tactical legal initiatives and compliance functions, advise on company strategies and their implementation, assist in managing the legal function, monitor and update the company’s legal and regulatory compliance needs and oversee the work of outside counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, analyze, review, and negotiate agreements with professional sports teams, conferences and leagues, regional sports networks, university athletic programs, state high school athletic organizations, venues and events (e.g., bowl games), as well as agreements with sponsors, on-air talent, and others
  • Coach & develop members of the legal team
  • Provide legal advice and support in connection with mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic investments
  • Identify, research and analyze relevant federal, state and local requirements and translate into business solutions and processes
  • Anticipate legal and contract/deal issues, and design and execute strategies to remediate risk to Playfly and its clients
  • Support human resources, finance and other groups within the Company
  • Assist General Counsel with dispute resolution and litigation oversight including drafting demand letters, managing discovery, and negotiating settlements
  • Assist with oversight of risk management
  • Develop protocols for efficient deployment of the legal department, including practical guidelines for identifying issues, circumstances and actions that require legal department review and approval
  • Conduct periodic employee training sessions with respect to company policies, and programs to promote awareness of legal issues and a culture of compliance
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience at a leading law firm and/or corporate legal department
  • Outstanding written and oral business communication skills
  • Excellent drafting and negotiating skills
  • Experience across multiple legal disciplines, with a focus on contract drafting and negotiation strongly preferred
  • Experience with consumer data privacy/security issues, technology transactions (including software as a service (SaaS) agreements), intellectual property and privacy policies is preferred
  • Experience in an in-house legal setting is preferred but not required
  • Experience in the sports media industry is preferred but not required

  • Strong commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, and cooperatively with senior and executive-level staff
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task multiple priorities
  • JD degree, admitted to practice law in the state in which located (must have evidence of good standing)

Schedule

The role is based in an office setting and is a sedentary role. Some travel may be required from time to time.
