This position supports the athletics communications, media relations, storytelling, and branding needs of the University of Virginia Athletics Department, with primary responsibility for baseball and volleyball.

About the role

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications serves as the primary media contact for baseball and volleyball, developing and executing strategic digital communications to elevate the Virginia Athletics brand. Responsibilities include creating graphics, photography, and video assets for digital platforms and social media, managing events, supervising student assistants, and producing creative content for assigned sports.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies.
  • Plan and direct communications through news releases, photography, creative video, social media, and personal contact.
  • Work with media representatives at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Manage events and supervise student assistants.
  • Create, design, and write digital and print content for assigned sports (baseball and volleyball).
  • Oversee the production of graphics, photography, and video projects for branding and content creation on digital platforms.
  • Develop long-term strategic digital communications for assigned programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or communications.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in athletics communications.
  • Knowledge of baseball and volleyball programs, with the ability to produce grammatically correct, professional written reports.
  • Demonstrated skills in graphics design, photography, videography, digital editing, desktop publishing, and social media.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, social media applications, and statistical programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and deliver high-level customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in athletics communications, including Division I baseball and volleyball.
  • Familiarity with NCAA and ACC rules and regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, social media applications, and Genius statistical programs.

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $50,000 – $55,000, dependent upon qualifications.

Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt-level position. The role is primarily sedentary with occasional travel for meetings and programs. On-site presence at UVA Grounds in Charlottesville, VA, is required.
