California State University, Bakersfield is seeking an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications to support its NCAA Division I Athletics Communications Office.

About the role

This position serves as the primary communications contact for assigned sports and is responsible for media relations, website management, social media, statistical reporting, game-day operations, and digital communications. The Assistant Director produces written and digital content, maintains athletics records and website content, coordinates media coverage, and supports live events while ensuring compliance with NCAA, conference, and university standards. The position requires evening, weekend, and occasional travel based on the athletics competition schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary communications contact for assigned sports
  • Manage media relations, website content, and social media platforms
  • Produce written and digital content, including press releases, feature stories, and game recaps
  • Maintain athletics records and ensure website content is up-to-date
  • Coordinate media coverage and support live event operations
  • Handle statistical reporting and digital communications
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • General knowledge of media relations, public affairs, and sports information
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to create and manage communications content for digital, social media, and web platforms
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn athletics communications software and university systems
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel with assigned teams as needed
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Communications or media relations experience in collegiate or professional athletics (Division I preferred)
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Genius NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew, Microsoft Office Suite, and SIDEARM Sports (or similar CMS)
  • Experience writing press releases, feature stories, game recaps, and other athletics communications materials using AP Style
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules, conference policies, and athletics communications best practices

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $4,570–$4,850 per month. Final salary will be based on the successful candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.
