California State University, Bakersfield is seeking an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications to support its NCAA Division I Athletics Communications Office.

About the role

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications will assist in promoting and enhancing the visibility of CSUB Athletics through strategic communications, media relations, and digital content creation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary media contact for assigned sports, cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Write and distribute press releases, game notes, feature stories, and other promotional materials.
  • Manage and update athletic department websites and social media platforms with timely, engaging content.
  • Coordinate media operations for home athletic events, including credentialing, press box management, and post-game interviews.
  • Develop and maintain statistical records for assigned sports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with NCAA guidelines.
  • Assist in the production of game programs, media guides, and other printed materials.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (marketing, video services, etc.) to create integrated promotional campaigns.
  • Represent the athletic department at community events, press conferences, and other public engagements.
  • Support the Athletic Communications team in day-to-day operations and special projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in athletic communications, sports information, or a related field (collegiate experience preferred).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop), Stat Crew, and content management systems (e.g., PrestoSports).
  • Experience managing social media platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook) and analytics tools.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, particularly those related to media and public relations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to cover athletic events.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $4,570–$4,850 per month. Final salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.
