Assistant Director, Nursing

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily nursing clinical operations and patient care delivery for one unit/department, including structured safety huddles and appropriate patient assignments.
• Assist in developing, reviewing, and revising nursing service policies, objectives, and standards; interpret policies for staff and other disciplines.
• Participate in planning, organizing, and evaluating nursing service and health programs; monitor delegation, care coordination, and escalation pathways.
• Assist in implementing organizational plans for nursing service that define functions, interdepartmental relationships, and staff competency.
• Oversee daily staffing, scheduling, and equipment coverage; make adjustments and manage overtime to meet departmental goals within budgetary guidelines.
• Collaborate with nursing leadership to develop strategies for identifying, retaining, and engaging nursing candidates; ensure proper staff orientation.
• Assist in developing administrative procedures and patient care programs; investigate practice or operational variances and implement corrective actions.
• Direct, supervise, and evaluate activities of nursing supervisors and personnel; conduct performance reviews and monitor unit-level quality indicators.
• Support performance management, competency validation, evidence-based practice, and professional development; prepare administrative reports.
• Monitor and correct gaps in clinical nurse documentation; reinforce policy adherence and documentation standards; maintain readiness for regulatory surveys.
• Lead staff participation in quality and safety initiatives; assess nursing services through rounds, chart reviews, and patient care observation.
• Participate in relevant meetings, healthcare events, and ensure adherence to protocols during emergencies and declared disasters.

• May plan, organize, direct, and evaluate nursing service for patient transfers to homes or assume responsibility for weekend/evening/night tours; provide guidance to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

• Valid New York State license and current registration as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing Administration or a related nursing discipline; or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
• For Master’s Degree holders: three (3) years of satisfactory nursing experience, including one (1) year in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
• For Bachelor’s Degree holders: four (4) years of satisfactory nursing experience, including two (2) years in a clinical supervisory capacity (e.g., Head Nurse, Supervisor).
• Demonstrated clinical competency in the relevant clinical area.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required depending on assignment; if required, must be obtained within sixty (60) days of appointment.
