Duties & Responsibilities

Summary Of Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director of Communications will report directly to the Senior Director of Internal Communications and will collaborate with Senior Director for Communications and Marketing on patient communications. This is primarily a content creation role with a heavy focus on reporting and writing articles and series for NYC Health + Hospitals internal employee newsletter, producing patient stories, and writing health related emails for our patient communities. Occasional weekend and evening duties may be required due to the communications team managing the voice of the entire health care system.

  • Primary responsibilities include contributions to and oversight of the INSIDER homepage, including reporting, researching, and writing articles; project management of the Photo of the Day feature, the Fast Five feature, and other staff facing news and information.
  • The Assistant Director will work closely with the press office, social media leads, and the digital marketing team to ensure all platforms are aligned.
  • Additional team responsibilities will include providing assistance for the health system podcast, including research, preparation, scheduling, guest booking, and support on recording dates and backing up the Social Media Director as needed with content creation, scheduling, and posting messages.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1. Bachelors’ degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, Marketing, or a related discipline; and,
  • 2. Two (2) years of responsible public relations experience involving the press and communications media, employee communications, community affairs, educational affairs, public information, corporate and business affairs, governmental and legislative affairs; or
  • 3. Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in disciplines, as listed in “1” above.

  • Preferred areas of study include journalism, English language, public relations, and public health.
  • Mastery of the English language is essential, with excellent writing, editing, storytelling, creative, project management, and verbal communication skills.
  • Absolutely must be a team player who understands all functions of a communications team and how to see the big picture.
  • Demonstrated ability in creative and strategic communications planning, strong meeting and presentation skills, and the capacity to pivot quickly from one project to another.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines is required.
  • A high level of responsiveness and accessibility is essential.
  • Video production and editing skills are a plus.
  • Knowledge of the Health + Hospitals system is a plus.
  • 3 to 5 years in an entry-level writing position required.
  • Writing and editing tests will be required.
