About the role
The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising, reporting to the Director of First Year Advising, plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of integrated academic and career advisors. This position also works collaboratively to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carry out the vision for the department, and work synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty and academic leaders of the University’s educational programs, and the University in its entirety.
Responsibilities
- Manage office delivered programming including intrusive advising efforts for the students reporting to the advisors on your team and career programming.
- Closely work with the Director of First-Year Advising and the Director of Pre-Health Advising serving as the primary liaison for pre-health interested students within the first-year advising population.
- Responsible for identifying and tracking pre-health interested first-year students, developing and delivering targeted programming, and ensuring students receive timely, accurate guidance related to pre-health pathways and expectations.
- Collaborate with campus partners to align first-year advising practices with pre-health advising needs and support the advising team by sharing resources, referral processes, and emerging trends related to pre-health student advising.
- Under the direction of the CAS/Maxwell Director of First-Year Advising, supervise an advising team and provide timely performance feedback.
- Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff and parents in matters related to advising. Provide expertise, support, and direction to advisors within assigned advising team.
- Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for assigned cohort of undergraduate students.
- Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation.
- Support assigned advising team in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University’s prescribed software.
- Manage escalated student cases that arise from your direct report advisors.
- Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post college paths.
- Partner with Alumni and/or Employer Relations (Central) to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals.
- Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University.
- Attend and participate in division, department and university-wide meetings and represent Office of Student Success as needed.
- Assess and analyze data related to early warning and at-risk first-year students to identify trends, inform outreach strategies, and guide proactive advising interventions. Collaborate with advising staff and campus partners to monitor student progress, evaluate the effectiveness of support initiatives, and use data to improve retention, engagement, and student success outcomes during the first year.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree and experience in a high-level support or a management role in higher education desired.
- At least two years’ experience in academic advising preferred.
- Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self-studies, academic advising, working with individuals under time and multitasking pressures.
