Assistant City Engineer
About the role
The Assistant City Engineer will assist the City Engineer in the planning, direction, and management of the Engineering Division within the Public Works Department. Key responsibilities include reviewing and approving new development projects, conducting engineering design, preparing cost estimates, performing field inspections, and overseeing project management.
Responsibilities
- Assist in planning, managing, and operating the Engineering Division, including land development, capital projects, stormwater management, permits, and construction inspection.
- Review subdivision, site, and development plans for compliance with regulations and standards.
- Maintain and update City engineering standards, specifications, and technical policies.
- Evaluate project impacts related to traffic, stormwater, utilities, and environmental requirements.
- Cook up coordination engineering reviews and activities with City departments, utility providers, and regulatory agencies.
- Provide technical guidance to developers, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Aid in planning, designing, budgeting, and delivering City projects.
- Review and approve engineering designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Manage project schedules and budgets for timely, cost-effective delivery.
- Supervise paraprofessional engineering staff and inspect public works construction projects.
- Represent the Engineering Division at public meetings, boards, and City Council.
- Prepare and present reports and technical information to elected officials and the public.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve complaints related to projects.
- Perform duties as assigned and serve as City Engineer in their absence.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Six (6) years of experience in the engineering field.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia or ability to obtain licensure within six (6) months through reciprocity.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Virginia DEQ Erosion & Stormwater Combined Program Administrator certification within 12 months.
Qualifications
This position requires a strong background in civil engineering principles, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to public service and a willingness to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and other relevant software is preferred. Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Pay
The Assistant City Engineer’s salary range is $90,000 - $125,000 DOE.
