Assistant Branch Manager (Queens)

Carver Federal Savings Bank · New York, NY · 2 wk ago
Finance$55k–$65k/yrFull-time

About the role

The Assistant Branch Manager is the Branch Manager's leadership partner, present on the floor, accountable for daily performance, and the person who ensures the branch standard holds whether the Branch Manager is in the building or in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Hold the client experience standard at the frontline level so that every interaction, regardless of account size or transaction type, reflects Carver's values and the professionalism our clients deserve.
  • Model the advisory approach on the floor: listen, understand, recommend, and follow through, treating every transaction as the beginning of a relationship, not the end of a visit.
  • Create Moments That Matter for every client through intentional, memorable interactions that go beyond the transaction and leave clients feeling seen, valued, and genuinely served by Carver.
  • Position Carver's digital tools as a natural part of every client conversation, coaching the team to make digital adoption a routine, not an exception.
  • Track client satisfaction indicators at the branch level and surface patterns and gaps to the Branch Manager with specific observations, not impressions.
  • Resolve client concerns requiring management involvement with urgency, sound judgment, and a commitment to keeping the relationship.
  • Carry personal production responsibility alongside management duties, opening accounts, deepening client relationships, and contributing directly to deposit growth and referral activity.
  • Maintain active client relationships, following up on referrals, and identifying growth opportunities within the existing book of business.
  • Work across Carver's lending, deposits, small business, and operations teams to ensure no client need goes unmet and no business opportunity is left on the table.
  • Talent Leadership and Team Development:
    • Serve as the primary day-to-day coach for the branch team, providing specific, timely feedback and recognizing strong performance as it happens, not just in formal reviews.
    • Lead team huddles and individual check-ins that keep colleagues clear on priorities, aligned on expectations, and connected to how their individual work ties to branch results.
    • Reinforce the advisory banking culture by coaching every colleague, including Relationship Bankers and Banking Associates, to engage across the full product suite, identify client opportunities in every interaction, and measure their contribution to branch growth.
    • Create Moments That Matter for colleagues through deliberate acts of recognition, investment, and connection that build a culture where people feel proud of the work and committed to each other's success.
    • Onboard new team members with care, set clear expectations from day one, and provide hands-on guidance that shortens the runway to full contribution.
    • Surface performance concerns and development needs to the Branch Manager with specific, observation-based input, never managing performance gaps informally or in isolation.
  • Operational Integrity and Risk Stewardship:
    • Co-own the branch operating environment with the Branch Manager so that compliance is woven into every process and every colleague's daily practice, not reserved for audit time.
    • Oversee daily operations with the discipline of a business owner: cash management, vault and ATM controls, transaction accuracy, documentation standards, and opening and closing procedures.
    • Sustain an audit-ready branch as an everyday standard, not a periodic exercise, and identify exceptions early and resolve them before they become findings.
    • Ensure full adherence to all regulatory requirements including CRA, BSA/AML, OFAC, and Regulation E, and Carver's internal policies.
    • Escalate controllable losses, internal fraud or theft concerns, and uncontrollable loss events promptly to the Branch Manager and appropriate compliance, HR, and operations partners, with zero tolerance for suppression or quiet resolution at the branch level.
    • Deliver clear, accurate, and timely operational reporting to the Branch Manager with full transparency on results, risks, and resource needs.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of progressive financial services experience with a demonstrated performance record in a client-facing role and at least some experience in team supervision, operations oversight, or acting management capacity.
  • Proven ability to hold a service and production standard across a team, not just individually, but in how they elevate the performance of those around them.
  • Working knowledge of retail banking regulatory requirements including BSA/AML, CRA, OFAC, and Regulation E, with experience maintaining a compliant branch environment.
  • Strong communication and coaching skills with the ability to give direct, specific, and useful feedback to colleagues at all levels.
  • Sound judgment under pressure, makes decisions, resolves problems, and steps into the lead when the situation calls for it.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent professional banking experience in lieu of degree will be considered on its merits.
  • NMLS registration required within 30 days of hire; availability for branch hours including weekends and evenings as business requires.

Preferred Experience

  • In a CDFI, MDI, or community banking environment with an understanding of mission-driven financial services and the clients they serve.
  • Demonstrated record of developing frontline colleagues through coaching, recognition, and structured feedback that resulted in measurable improvement in performance or readiness.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, or other languages that reflect the communities Carver serves.
