Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor of German
About the role
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at Penn State (University Park) invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor position in German (non-tenure-track), to begin in August 2027, with flexibility. This is a term position; the length of the term will be discussed during the interview process, with continuation past the term length based on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding. Review of applications will begin November 2, 2026 and continue until the position is filled.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the residential basic German language program.
- Supervise graduate teaching assistants who teach in the basic language program.
- Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced German language classes.
- Teach any combination of literature and culture (including visual culture), business German, or linguistics courses based on expertise.
- Teaching load is three courses per semester, with reductions for coordination duties.
Requirements
- Native or near-native fluency in English and German.
- Completed Ph.D. in German or a related field by the appointment date.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching German.
- Knowledge of current approaches and theories of foreign‑language pedagogy.
