Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (HS Clin, Clin X) Director of Clinical Coagulation and Hemostasis

UC San Diego Department of Pathology seeks an academic clinical pathologist to serve as Director of the Clinical Coagulation and Hemostasis section, providing medical and technical oversight for all general and specialized coagulation and hemostasis laboratory services across UC San Diego Health’s La Jolla-Jacobs Medical Center, Hillcrest Medical Center, and the Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM).

About the role

The Director will develop, validate, and implement advanced diagnostic tests/profiles; ensure quality and patient safety; promote laboratory stewardship; and provide interpretative consultation for high-acuity clinical programs including trauma/critical care, stroke, cardiovascular surgery, high-risk obstetrics, hematology/oncology, bleeding and clotting disorders, transplantation, cellular/gene therapy, and sickle cell/thalassemia clinics.

The role includes teaching medical students, medical laboratory scientist trainees, pathology residents, and clinical fellows in ACGME-accredited hematopathology and hematology/oncology programs.

Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in either the Health Sciences Clinical Professor or Clinical X Professor series, based on experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical and technical oversight for all clinical coagulation and hemostasis laboratory services at UC San Diego Health.
• Develop, validate, and implement advanced and innovative diagnostic tests/profiles.
• Ensure high standards of quality and patient safety.
• Promote laboratory stewardship and advance best practices.
• Provide key interpretative and consultation services for bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
• Support complex, high-acuity clinical programs (trauma/critical care, stroke, cardiovascular surgery, high-risk obstetrics, hematology/oncology, transplantation, etc.).
• Teach medical students, medical laboratory scientist trainees, pathology residents, and clinical fellows.

Requirements

• MD or equivalent, or MD/PhD in biological sciences, chemistry/biochemistry, molecular biology/genetics, experimental pathology, or another health-related field.
• Eligibility for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit.
• Board certification or eligibility in clinical pathology (CP), anatomic pathology/clinical pathology (AP/CP), or equivalent by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath).
• Alternatively, certification by another ABMS-approved primary medical specialty board (e.g., ABIM, ABP) with subspecialty certification or eligibility in transfusion medicine, hematopathology, hematology, or pediatric hematology-oncology.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of clinical practice experience in clinical coagulation and hemostasis.
• Track record of scholarly contributions in clinical, translational, and/or basic research.

Pay

Base pay range: $297,000 – $385,000. Salary is negotiated annually. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan.
