Salary is negotiated annually within the range of $315,000 - $403,000. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan.

About the role

The Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Diego seeks an academic transfusion medicine physician to join the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine. The successful candidate will serve as an Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine and the Blood Banks at UC San Diego Health’s La Jolla-Jacobs Medical Center, Hillcrest Medical Center, and the Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM). These clinical services support hemotherapy and human biologics manufacturing for advanced surgery and transplantation, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, women and infants care, Level I trauma service, and a regional burn center.

The position involves clinical and administrative responsibilities, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and offers opportunities for translational and clinical research collaboration with leading investigators at UC San Diego and nearby institutions.

The appropriate series and appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor will be based on the candidate’s background and experience. Available series include:

  • HS Clinical Professor (APM 278)
  • Clinical X Professor (APM 275)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine and the Blood Banks at UC San Diego Health facilities
  • Support hemotherapy and human biologics manufacturing needs for strategic programs
  • Clinical and administrative duties in transfusion medicine
  • Teach medical students, residents, and fellows
  • Collaborate on translational and clinical research

Requirements

  • MD or equivalent, or MD/PhD in biological sciences, chemistry, immunology, molecular biology/genetics, experimental pathology, or another health-related field
  • Eligibility for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit
  • Board certification or eligibility in clinical pathology (CP) or anatomic pathology/clinical pathology (AP/CP) by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath)
  • Subspecialty certification or eligibility in transfusion medicine (ABPath) or equivalent
  • Alternatively, certification by another ABMS-approved primary medical specialty board (e.g., ABIM or ABP) with subspecialty certification or eligibility in transfusion medicine (ABPath) or equivalent

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Additional subspecialty training, practice experience, and certification in histocompatibility/immunogenetics (HLA), coagulation/hemostasis, and/or hematopoietic stem cell processing/cellular biotherapy
