About the role

The Alan Levin Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Kansas State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Nuclear Engineering with a focus on fusion. The successful candidate will establish and sustain a robust, externally funded research program that aligns with the Nuclear Engineering Program’s strengths and advances the university’s secure-energy mission. Responsibilities include teaching nuclear engineering courses and providing professional service in national and international roles. While the search is primarily at the assistant professor level, outstanding candidates may be considered for associate or full professor. Tenure will be granted only to exceptional applicants.

About us

The Nuclear Engineering Program comprises eight faculty, two staff, and approximately 140 undergraduate and graduate students. The program operates a 1.25 MW TRIGA Mark II Nuclear Reactor with pulsing capability. Recent state and federal investments are propelling the program toward a Top 15 national ranking by 2030. Worksite

This is an on-site position. All employees must reside in the United States at the start of employment. Remote or hybrid arrangements are not available for residents of Idaho.

Requirements

  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution (required for accreditation and specialized expertise)

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering with a fusion research background
  • Proven ability to secure external research funding in fusion-related areas
  • Strong existing collaborations with National Laboratories

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: \$125,000 – \$175,000 annual salary
