Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE)-AI initiative, addressing significant, complex challenges through accelerated medical research using artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative AI training for practitioners. The initiative focuses on advancing both the technical dimensions and human-centered implications of AI in medicine and health.

About the Role

The School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) at the University of Wisconsin seeks an outstanding candidate for a tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly research, excellence in teaching, and professional service, with the ability to translate basic science discoveries into clinical practice. This role offers opportunities for joint appointments within other departments and schools, depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests.

Focus Areas

• Precision Population Health: Improving health through precision prevention and intervention
• Molecular Discovery: Identification of novel targets and drugs; analysis of large data sets to uncover new biological discoveries
• Integrated Diagnostics: AI-enabled screening, diagnostics, therapeutics, treatment monitoring, and decision making
• Advanced AI & Foundational Data Science: Advanced methodological approaches in AI relevant to health care

Responsibilities

• Participate in teaching efforts within an SMPH department, including lectures, conferences, and training of residents, fellows, and medical students.
• Engage in administrative and committee work supporting the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and SMPH.
• Collaborate on interdisciplinary research and education efforts across departments, schools, and colleges.
• Provide mentorship to junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, fostering a collaborative environment.
• Serve on research mentor committees as needed.
• If a physician-scientist, provide clinical care, including direct patient care at UW Health locations.
• Conduct innovative research and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate knowledge into clinical practice.
• Apply for research grants and funding opportunities to support ongoing projects and initiatives.
• Disseminate research findings through publications, scientific conferences, and presentations.
• Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and regulations in research involving human subjects and animal models.

Requirements

• Researcher in one of the following areas: Precision Population Health, Molecular Discovery, Integrated Diagnostics, or Advanced AI & Foundational Data Science.
• Record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national/international meetings.
• Experience with teaching learners.
• WI medical license required by start date if performing clinical work.
• Academic credentials sufficient for appointment on the Tenure Track.

Preferred Qualifications

• MD, MD and PhD, or PhD or equivalent by start date in computer science, oncology, neurosciences, biomedical imaging, drug development, or a related field.
