About the Program

The Program of Asian American Studies is housed in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS) at San José State University. The SISS Department offers a BA degree program in Sociology with concentrations in Community Change, Race and Ethnic Studies, and Women, Gender, & Sexuality, as well as minors in Asian American Studies, Sociology, Sociology of Education, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies. With approximately 700 majors and 40 faculty members, SISS is a growing and vibrant department community committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

SJSU enrolls over 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, with around 45% first-generation and 38% Pell-recipients. The university is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution.

About the Role

The department invites applications for a pool of part-time teaching appointments. Positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding, and candidates may be required to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term runs from late August to mid-December, and the Spring term from mid-January to mid-May.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in Asian American Studies, with current needs in Introduction to Asian American Studies and U.S. History and Politics.
• Prepare for class, evaluate student performance, and develop or revise syllabi.
• Hold weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.
• Review current literature and research in the subject area.
• Assess course and program learning outcomes and implement pedagogical improvements.
• Organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official platform for all SJSU courses.

Requirements

• A Master’s degree in Asian American Studies, a related discipline, or a field relevant to the curriculum (required for teaching lower-division courses).
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in Asian American Studies, a related discipline, or a field relevant to the curriculum (required for teaching upper-division courses).
• Prior teaching experience at the college or university level, with evidence of excellence in teaching.

Pay

Compensation is determined by qualifications and experience, with monthly salary ranges for part-time appointments prorated from the following full-time rates:

• L-A / Range 2: $5,507 – $5,959 per month
• L-B / Range 3: $6,221 – $7,481 per month
• L-C / Range 4: $6,825 – $9,431 per month
• L-D / Range 5: $8,593 – $10,347 per month
