About the Program

The Asian American Studies Program at Fresno State has a four-decade history within the Department of Anthropology and is a valued part of the university. The program serves a student body that is over 15% Asian American and Pacific Islander, with vibrant and active student organizations. It offers a minor and will launch a new major in the 2026-27 academic year. Courses focus on the history and contemporary experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, exploring themes such as local and ethnic history, trans-Pacific contact, cultural change and adaptation, and interethnic relations. These classes familiarize students with the historical, socioeconomic, and cultural adaptations of peoples from Asia in the United States.

About the Role

The department seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate courses or other classes identified as needed to fulfill educational goals. Temporary faculty are responsible for adhering to university and system-wide policies, preparing and delivering lectures, conducting office hours, assigning and grading coursework, proctoring exams, and ensuring classes meet as scheduled in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Appointments are contingent upon budget, enrollment, and order-of-assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement. Eligibility to work in the U.S. is required; the university does not sponsor work visas for temporary faculty.

Schedule and Appointment

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, with positions filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Appointments are part-time, temporary, and often made just prior to the start of the academic term, with potential for short notice. The pool remains active for two academic terms; reapplication is required to remain in the pool beyond that period. Anticipated semesters include:

• Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
• Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Ethnic Studies or a closely related field, with an emphasis in Asian American Studies (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent).
• Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experience, evaluations, or other documentation.
• Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Pay

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The salary range for temporary faculty with a Master’s degree is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full-time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary is adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.
